Old Spike is a social enterprise on a mission to reduce homelessness in the UK.

Old Spike Roastery provides an exciting dynamic for LJ Works, supporting extensive workplace training opportunities for homeless people in Lambeth. With 65% of their profits reinvested into their training academy, they are able to offer practical and theory-based learning, and post-training employment for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Old Spike expect to provide training for up to 520 people in the first two years of operation in Loughborough Junction, working with their employment partners to help place each graduate into a London Living Wage job.

LJ Works is situated on a Lambeth Council-owned plot of land between Rathgar Road and Styles Gardens, to the rear of Loughborough Junction railway station. Designed by 00 Architects and Public Works Design Practice, Lambeth Council have led the development works, supported by the Mayor’s London Regeneration Fund. The scheme will be operated by Meanwhile Space, a social enterprise at the forefront of meanwhile use; providing low-cost flexible workspaces for start-ups and emerging local businesses.

The new scheme comprises two buildings. The front building creates a strong and active frontage to Loughborough Road and will contain self-contained office spaces. The rear building will house Old Spike’s roastery, co-working and workshop spaces. Loughborough Farm’s community growing spaces extend between the two halves of the site, creating a flow of users and green landscapes.

“We are really excited about the opportunity to bring our speciality coffee and social impact to Loughborough Junction! LJ Works is an exciting development and one that perfectly aligns with our business – providing training and employment opportunities to people experiencing homelessness. We hope to make an immediate impact on our local community and look forward to meeting and working with all the other exciting businesses that will be joining us in the scheme.”
